Welcome back everyone to MonsterWatch Week 2! Your weekly look at some of the biggest and/or most influential auctions of the week around the hobby. And boy did we have some amazing final numbers for some of last weeks inaugural Monsters (see analysis below). But collectors seem to be looking to end September with a bang, as this week the auction market is LOADED yet again. Lets dive in!
2019 Panini Spectra Kyler Murray/ Daniel Jones Dual Patch Auto Superfractor
With two beautiful patches & autos (although they’re still stickers…C’MON Panini!!) combined with the iconic champagne swirls of the Superfractor finish, this card is a shining example of how beautiful this years Spectra Football is. One of the bigger cards of this years release (so far), it should come as no surprise its high on the list of this weeks MonsterWatch. The fact that they are both now starting, and playing well, will only send this cards price higher.

2015 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Cody Bellinger ROOKIE AUTO /25 BGS 9.5
As Bellinger approaches a possible MVP season, the collecting world has once again taken notice. Crazy to think he actually flew under the radar over the last year 1/2. With players like Aaron Judge, Ohtani, Juan Soto & Ronald Acuna Jr. taking most of the hobby spotlight the past few years, it’s been quite a while since the Belly hype was this strong. But the Dodgers outfielder is continuing to prove game after game that he’s worth the investment. One of his biggest Prospect Autos, this sale will greatly impact the 1st Bowman Bellinger market, from Base to Super.

2017 Select Black Prizm Die-Cut Patrick Mahomes RC AUTO 1/1 PSA 10
Another week, another impressive performance both on the field and in the hobby by the reigning MVP. We saw a monster last week (see analysis below), and it comes as no surprise that another has come up for sale this week. This beautiful Select 1/1, even with a sticker auto, should command top dollar, as the Mahomes market hasn’t begun to level off. It’s got to eventually, right?

2019 Bowman Chrome Freudis Nova 1st Bowman Auto Red #’d 2/5
With the release of the Prospecting-Monster Bowman Chrome, its no shock to see them on MonsterWatch. Although seemingly a down year for the brand, as case and break prices are being slashed daily, a few prospects are still grabbing collectors attention early. Red Refractors are always in demand, but Nova exploded out of the gate and the hobby world immediately took notice. Despite the very small sample size, prospectors are firmly behind the 18 year old. This could end up soaring.
ENDS: Saturday 9/28 @ 6:03pm EST
2019-20 Panini Contenders Optic Gold Prizm Ja Morant RC Auto 5/5
Despite what some may think, there are other Rookies in this years class besides Zion that have superstar potential. And while the hobby world overpays for Zion, players like Ja have been an absolute steal. But the first (of many) wave of Zion-fatigue seems to have set in, and Morant has reaped the benefits, as his cards are steadily on the rise.

1916 Holmes to Homes #151 Babe Ruth SGC 1
WOW! Talk about an absolute MONSTER! Currently up for auction at The Mile High Card Company, this amazing 1916 Babe Ruth card is the incredibly rare Holmes to Homes Bread Back version. How rare, you ask? This is the ONLY copy of the Ruth known to exist. With no known print run, and the fact that the cards were used as redemptions for sporting equipment (so THIS is who we blame for redemptions) & other prizes, the chances of many more ever surfacing are quite slim. Will we see six figures?
ENDS: Thursday 10/10 @ 9:15pm EST
2018 National Treasures Mason Rudolph /99 RPA
We’ve seen quite a few impressive performances by backups this season, after multiple star QB’s went down early. But none have seen their hobby stock soar like Mason Rudolph. Steelers always command decent money, but cards you couldn’t give away to Steelers FANS a month ago, are now seeing these same cards values skyrocket. This “True RPA” from National Treasures will probably set a record for Rudolph sales.
ENDS: Saturday 9/28 @ 9:57pm
Kyle Allen 2018 Panini Unparalleled Rookie Auto
Speaking of backups getting some insane bumps in the hobby. After an excellent performance against Arizona, Allen has become one of the “weekly darlings” in the hobby. And with very few autographs (or cards in general), prices have begun to soar. From the commons box to MonsterWatch, its been a big week for the young QB. Grandma Newton better watch his back, this offense fits Allen to a T.
ENDS: Tuesday 9/24 @ 10:01pm EST
2016 Bowman Chrome Alex Bregman Prospect Auto BGS 9.5/10
As Bregman pushes towards a possible MVP, collectors have taken notice and his cards are finally on the rise. Like a few others on this weeks list, he’s been hampered more from the amazing star power coming up around the same time as him, as opposed to talent or statistics. A tell-tale sign hobbyists are betting on big things from the Astros star? The incredibly limited amount of auctions, as the majority have optioned for a Buy It Now listing with a high starting price. One of Bregman’s top Prospect cards (and incredibly hard to Gem), this auction should go a long way in determining the market value for the near future. At least until he adds some more hardware to his mantle.
ENDS: Wednesday 9/25 @ 9:59pm EST
Lebron James 2006-07 E-X EX Jambalaya BGS 9
He may be battling the MonStars next year in theaters, but The King is already making his presence felt here at MonsterWatch. He may have RC’s and Autos that go for higher (for now), but this classic card is a ridiculously underrated “Monster-In-The-Rough.” The iconic insert has always had a die-hard cult following, but in the last few years the “mainstream” hobby has begun to catch on, and prices have been on the rise. Like the MJ Metal PMG’s, these Jambalaya inserts will stake their claim as one of, if not THE, “non-rookie, non-ink” cards in The Kings legacy.
ENDS: Wednesday 9/25 @ 12:12am EST
Quite a few interesting auctions this week that will have quite the impact on their respective markets. With the NFL especially, you’re seeing a lot of money being pumped into some previously ignored players. With that said, lets take a look at the results of last weeks MonsterWatch below.
MonsterWatch Auction Analysis 9/16-9/23
- 2010 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor Nolan Arenado ROOKIE RC AUTO 5/5 BGS 9.5 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $26,201 on 61 bids.
Quite the impresive sale for the Rockies star. Collectors seem to be firmly behind Arenado as a Superstar in this league. But the big question remains: Can his value continue to rise if he stays in Colorado? And will he? Whether he stays or goes, one things for sure. The Arenado market is on fire!
- Lamar Jackson Auto RC 2018 Contenders Rookie Ticket Varaition SSP PSA 10 (See Original Auction)
SOLDFOR: “$1,525” on BS Shill Bidding
This stuff drives me crazy. Market manipulation at its finest. This one wasn’t even a good attempt, as the 0 Feedback, new to eBay seller swooped in at the last minute to bump the bid up JUST enough ($25 to be exact) to win the auction, probably because they didn’t get the huge bump they expected after Sundays game. I’m sure seller deadfootballcards will have it relisted in no time.
- 2009 Bowman Chrome Xfractor Mike Trout ROOKIE RC AUTO JSY # 27/225 BGS 9 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $18,200 on 61 bids.
Death, Taxes, and enormous Trout sales. We might as well add that one into the vernacular, as the Angels superstar continues to dominate the collecting world. Before being shut down for the year due to injury, he was having another historical season. In the baseball market, he’s the modern day unicorn. Others will come and go, but Trout just continues to rise.
- 2017 National Treasures S & S Patrick Mahomes II ROOKIE RC AUTO PATCH /13 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $40,099 on 125 bids.
Absolutely incredible. If there was any question who the King of the NFL hobby is right now, it’s been answered. Yes, I know Tom Brady is still around. But the NFL market has been itching for a new hobby darling to emerge. One that has staying power beyond a 17-week season. Mahomes answered those prayers, and it looks like he’s here to stay. The Ultra-High-End section of the hobby seems to have fully bought in, which is good for anyone that has Mahomes RC’s.
- 2019-20 Contenders Building Blocks College Ticket Zion Williamson RC AUTO 5/5 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $2,200 on 44 bids.
This one surprised me a bit. Now, we’re probably going to be covering quite a bit of Zion over the next few months at MonsterWatch, with many having astronomical final price tags attached to them. But it looks like collectors have finally realized that these are Contenders DRAFT, and not National Treasures RPA’s. Prices have leveled out, and most importantly, they are real, true sales. The trolling and market manipulation has slowed down, to the point where collectors can now fairly assess value.
- 2009 Exquisite Collection Flashback Michael Jordan AUTO PATCH /23 BGS 8.5 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $46,119.99 on 31 bids.
On the debut edition of MonsterWatch, I wrote how iconic and treasured the 2009 Exquisite Collection was with hobbyists while writing about this card. A week later and the proof is in the bidding.
- 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb – Ty Cobb (Portrait-Red) PSA Good 2
SOLD FOR: $156,000
Well, there sure was a GOOD reason this gorgeous vintage piece was on last weeks MonsterWatch. There’s a common saying in the hobby, that “vintage is king.” Hard to argue after seeing this
- 2019 Luminaries Hank Greenberg Game Used Bat Knob Cut Auto 1/1 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $3,150 on 40 bids.
Quite the impressive final number for a booklet, but not surprising when you see it came from Luminaries. Bat Knobs & Barrels continue to command a premium to collectors. Of course, it helps when that bat knob belongs to a legend.
- 2019 TOPPS LUMINARIES LIGHTING THE WAY DUAL AUTO SADAHARU OH SHOHEI OHTANI 1/1 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $2,675.51 on 50 bids
There were a couple auctions on last weeks list that surprised me, but none more so than this one. With the two biggest stars in Japanese baseball history on the same card, I thought for sure this would go for $5k+. Still an incredibly strong sale, especially for a cut signature AND booklet, two features a large subset of the hobby tends to avoid.
- 2012 National Treasures Anthony Davis ROOKIE RC AUTO PATCH /199 RC BGS 9 (See Original Auction)
SOLD FOR: $9,588 on 34 bids.
Boy does that Lakers market do wonders for an NBA Star’s hobby value. AD always deserved a ton of hobby love, and while he wasn’t overlooked by any means, being stuck in NO hurt, as his cards had hit a wall. A wall that collectors smashed through, betting on the combo of AD & The King to raise the value of both players cards significantly. Something tells me this isn’t the last we’ll see from AD in MonsterWatch.
